The Tradition

The Peony Garden began in 1922 with a generous gift of plants from Dr. W. E. Upjohn, founder of the Upjohn Pharmaceutical Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden history indicates the depth of Dr. Upjohn’s passion to improve the lives of citizens, including through a beautiful garden at the Nichols Arboretum.

The peony garden rejuvenation is possible due to generously donated time, funds, and resources from hundreds of citizens. Major supporters have provided key funding, but much remains to be done in the next few years. As we work to complete the rejuvenation of the peony garden, your donations are both welcome and needed.

Your annual Matthaei-Nichols membership gift provides extra support to help fund peony garden restoration initiatives, student internships that help keep the plants looking fantastic, and seasonal peony education opportunities for the public.
